About The Artist
Eiffel Chong (b. 1977, Malaysia) graduated with an MA in International Contemporary Art and Design Practice from the University of East London and a BA (Hons) in Photography from London College of Printing. Besides his production of photographic work, Chong is highly engaged with the Malaysian photographic community; taking on the role of mentor for the Malaysian Pixel Shooting Stars programme and Exposure+ Workshop. In addition, he has been appointed to the panel of judges for the Kuala Lumpur Photography Awards 2016 and 2017 Annual Nikon Photo Awards, Malaysia. He is also an academician with Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology.
Eiffel Chong’s work considers abstract concepts of life and death through the banal details, silent landscapes and curious obsessions he observes from daily life. He is interested in how the photographic medium can translate a particular time and space, memories and thoughts into something permanent. He personally thinks that the images say more with less, and makes one just want to stare and think about it.
He is currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

These photographs taken in Malaysia are symbols of the failure of progression I feel in this beloved country of mine. Back in the 70s, Malaysia used to have a higher GDP than Taiwan and South Korea. Today, both countries have since progressed and left Malaysia behind. Destroyed by corruption, Malaysia is going through a difficult period of time where its government is linked with the biggest financial scandal in the world. This has resulted in the Ringgit (Malaysia currency) being one of the weakest in the region.
Feels Like Paper Cut is a visual project on documenting the signs of failure of the country. Asia is experiencing explosive growth in economy and social-culture. However, the same thing couldn’t be said to Malaysia and I started noticing these signs back in 2013. As time passed, these signs became bolder, almost screaming at me.
Feels Like Paper Cut by Eiffel Chong is part of In Times to Come, an image-based exhibition by seven Malaysian artists as part of the Crossing SEA series, DECK’s ongoing exploration on contemporary photography in Southeast Asia.
